From The Vault: Porno For Pyros - "Pets"

In the summer of 1993, I spent a lot of my time eating icing straight out of the container, watching re-runs of 'The Love Connection' and never missing an episode of 'Ghostwriter'. I remember a lot of things from that summer...but, one thing I vividly recall is how much I loved the Porno For Pyros song "Pets". The video came on at least every hour and then slowly every other hour. Even as a 13 year old, I knew Perry Farrell was an odd ball. I had prior knowledge of Farrell with his first band, Jane's Addiction, and their blatantly wacky video for "Been Caught Stealing" which was also an MTV sensation. However, there was something different about "Pets".

The video itself has a very early 90's feel, but with a twist of supreme mid 80's inspiration. The song was so catchy I don't think I even knew what Farrell was singing out for about the first two months. The song deals with a dissatisfaction with the human race and how humanity is heading towards destruction. The song then goes on to describe how aliens, possibly Martians, will be able to take over for us. In the end, Farrell believes that as humans...we will simply make great pets to our new overlords.
